How much fiber you need

The Institute of Medicine (now part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine) established fiber’s Adequate Intake in 2002, based on the intake levels observed to help protect against heart disease.

The drop after age 50 isn’t because older adults need less fiber for the same health benefit — it reflects the fact that calorie needs typically decline with age, and fiber recommendations are calibrated relative to typical intake. Most fiber-rich whole foods contain a mix of both types rather than being purely one or the other — this calculator’s 25% soluble / 75% insoluble split is a reasonable general target rather than a strict ratio to hit precisely, since eating a genuinely varied mix of high-fiber foods (rather than tracking soluble and insoluble grams separately) naturally lands most people in a broadly reasonable range of both.
