How grout volume is calculated

When tiles are installed, they're never placed edge-to-edge — a small gap is left between each one, and that gap gets filled with grout. Calculating how much grout you need comes down to figuring out how much of your total tiled area is actually gap rather than tile, then multiplying that gap area by how deep the grout needs to go.

Tile coverage ratio R = (tile length × tile width) ÷ [(tile length + gap) × (tile width + gap)]

This ratio, R, tells you what fraction of the total surface is covered by tile faces rather than grout joints. Once you have it, the grout area is simply the leftover fraction of your total tiled area:

Worked example — 50 sq ft of 12×12 in tile, 1/8 in gap, 3/8 in deep:

  1. Coverage ratio: R = (12 × 12) ÷ [(12 + 0.125) × (12 + 0.125)] = 144 ÷ 147.02 ≈ 0.9795
  2. Grout area: 50 × (1 − 0.9795) = 50 × 0.0205 ≈ 1.02 sq ft
  3. Grout volume: 1.02 × (0.375 ÷ 12) ≈ 0.032 cu ft
  4. At a typical dry-grout density of 100 lb per cubic foot: 0.032 × 100 ≈ 3.2 lb of dry grout, before waste

With a 10% waste allowance, that’s roughly 3.5 lb — well under a single 25 lb bag for a project this size, which is why grout is often sold in smaller bag sizes than concrete or mortar; most residential tiling jobs simply don’t need much of it by weight, even though the tile area itself might be substantial.

In metric, the same calculation with 305×305 mm tile and a 3 mm gap, over 4.6 m² (roughly 50 sq ft), gives a coverage ratio of about 0.980 and a grout volume of around 0.0009 m³ — consistent with the imperial result once converted.

Sanded vs. unsanded grout

Grout comes in two basic formulations, and choosing the wrong one is one of the most common tiling mistakes.

Sanded grout contains fine sand mixed into the cement base, which adds body and helps prevent shrinkage and cracking in wider joints. It’s the standard choice for gaps of 1/8 inch (3 mm) or wider, and it’s generally less expensive than unsanded grout for a given volume. The sand also gives it slightly more texture underfoot and in the joint line, which some installers consider a durability advantage on floors.

Unsanded grout is a smoother, sand-free formulation used for narrow joints — typically 1/16 to 1/8 inch (1.6–3 mm) — where the coarser sand particles in sanded grout would be too large to pack properly into a thin gap. It’s also the standard choice for polished or honed natural stone tile, since sanded grout can scratch soft or polished stone surfaces during application. Unsanded grout is more prone to shrinkage cracking if used in a joint wider than about 1/8 inch, which is why the sanded/unsanded choice is driven directly by gap width rather than personal preference.

Both types use essentially the same volume and weight calculation — the sand content doesn’t meaningfully change the density figure used in the formula above, so the same calculator works for either type; the practical difference is simply which product you buy based on your chosen gap width.

Epoxy grout is a third category worth knowing about, distinct from both traditional formulations. Rather than a cement base, epoxy grout uses an epoxy resin and hardener, cured chemically rather than by drying out. It’s significantly more stain- and moisture-resistant than cement-based grout, doesn’t require sealing, and holds up better in commercial kitchens, showers, and other demanding wet environments. The tradeoffs are a notably higher material cost, a shorter working time before it begins to set (making it less forgiving for first-time installers), and a stiffer, sometimes trickier application technique. Epoxy grout’s volume calculation follows the same geometry as cement-based grout — the joint dimensions determine the volume needed regardless of formulation — but epoxy is typically sold in smaller kit sizes with a fixed resin-to-hardener ratio rather than the simple dry-bag-plus-water format assumed by this calculator, so check your specific product’s coverage rate rather than relying on the bag-based figures here.

Choosing the right gap width

Gap width — sometimes called joint width — affects both the look of the finished tile work and, as the formula above shows, the amount of grout needed.

Rectified tile — tile that’s been precision-cut after firing so every piece is exactly the same size — can use very narrow joints because there’s little size variation to hide. Handmade, rustic, or irregular tile, by contrast, needs a wider joint specifically to absorb the natural size variation between individual pieces; a narrow joint on irregular tile either won’t lay flat or will look visibly uneven once installed.

Manufacturer and installer recommendations should take priority over any general guideline — many tile manufacturers specify a minimum joint width for their specific product, and going narrower can void a warranty or cause installation problems regardless of what a general rule of thumb suggests.

Grout color and long-term maintenance

Grout color has a bigger visual impact on a finished tile job than many first-time tilers expect. A grout color close to the tile itself creates a seamless, uniform look that tends to make a space feel larger and draws attention to the tile’s own pattern or material. A strongly contrasting grout color — dark grout with light tile, or vice versa — highlights the tile’s shape and the layout pattern itself, which can look intentional and graphic when planned for, or distracting if it wasn’t the goal.

Cement-based grout, whether sanded or unsanded, is inherently porous and will absorb some amount of moisture, oil, and staining agents over time unless sealed. Most manufacturers recommend applying a penetrating sealer 48 to 72 hours after grouting, once the grout has cured sufficiently, and then resealing on a schedule — commonly every 1 to 2 years in normal residential use, more frequently in heavy-traffic or wet areas like kitchen floors and shower floors. Darker grout colors tend to show less visible staining between sealings than very light or white grout, which is a practical consideration worth weighing alongside the purely aesthetic color choice, especially for floors.

Calculating for multiple rooms or tile sizes

Projects that mix tile sizes — a different tile on the shower floor than on the shower walls, for instance, or a bathroom floor paired with a different tile in an adjoining hallway — need a separate grout calculation for each distinct tile size and gap combination, then the results added together for a combined bag order. Because the coverage ratio (R) depends on the specific tile dimensions and gap width, there’s no single “grout per square foot” figure that applies correctly across tile sizes that differ from each other — a figure that’s accurate for 12×12 inch tile will understate the grout needed for a smaller mosaic tile and overstate it for a larger format tile, since the joint-to-tile-area ratio changes with tile size even when the gap width itself stays the same.

Grout depth and tile thickness

Grout depth is almost always set by the tile’s own thickness, since grout fills the joint from the substrate up to the tile surface. Standard ceramic and porcelain floor tile commonly runs 3/8 to 1/2 inch (9.5–13 mm) thick, while wall tile is often thinner, and large-format porcelain panels can be thicker still.

Because grout volume scales directly with depth, thicker tile means proportionally more grout for the same tiled area and gap width — doubling the tile thickness roughly doubles the grout volume needed, all else equal. This is worth checking directly against your actual tile before ordering, since nominal thickness on a spec sheet can differ slightly from the tile actually in the box.

Waste allowance

Grout waste comes from a few consistent sources: mixing more than gets used before the batch starts to set, grout that’s spread onto tile faces and later wiped away during cleanup (a normal part of the application process, but material that’s still consumed), and minor variation in how deep or wide joints actually end up compared to the planned dimensions.

10% is a sensible default for most residential jobs and is what the calculator applies unless you choose otherwise. Small mosaic tile in particular has a much higher joint-to-tile ratio than large-format tile, meaning proportionally more grout relative to the tiled area — the higher waste allowance helps account for the larger number of individual joints being filled and cleaned.

Real-world applications

A standard bathroom floor, say 40 sq ft of 12×12 inch porcelain tile with a 1/8 inch joint, typically needs well under one 25 lb bag of grout — often just a few pounds — which is why grout is commonly sold in smaller quantities than the material used to actually set the tile.

A kitchen backsplash using smaller tile — subway tile or mosaic sheets — covers a much smaller total area than a floor but often has proportionally more grout per square foot, since smaller individual tiles mean more joints packed into the same space. A 20 sq ft backsplash in small mosaic tile can sometimes need a comparable amount of grout to a much larger floor in large-format tile.

Large-format floor or wall tile (18×18 inches and larger) needs comparatively little grout relative to its area, since there are simply fewer joints per square foot. This is one of the practical, non-aesthetic reasons large-format tile has become popular — less grout means less ongoing maintenance, since grout lines are typically the first thing to show wear, staining, or the need for resealing over time.

A shower surround combining wall and floor tile is a common scenario that needs two separate calculations run and added together — shower walls are frequently larger-format tile with a narrower joint, while shower floors often use small mosaic tile (partly for slip resistance, partly to accommodate the slope toward the drain) with a correspondingly higher grout requirement per square foot. Treating the whole shower as one uniform tile size and gap width will understate the total grout needed, sometimes significantly, because of how much more grout the mosaic floor portion requires relative to its modest square footage.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using sanded grout in a very narrow joint. Below about 1/8 inch, sanded grout’s coarser texture can prevent it from packing properly into the gap, leaving voids or an uneven surface. Match grout type to joint width, not personal preference alone.
  • Guessing tile thickness instead of measuring it. Since grout depth (and therefore volume) tracks tile thickness directly, an assumed thickness that’s off by even 1/8 inch meaningfully changes the actual grout volume needed on a large job.
  • Forgetting that smaller tile needs proportionally more grout. It’s easy to assume grout needs scale purely with square footage, but smaller tile with the same gap width has a much higher joint-to-tile-area ratio — always run the calculation with your actual tile size rather than assuming a flat “grout per square foot” figure from a different project.
  • Not accounting for both floor and wall tile separately if a project includes both. Wall tile is often thinner than floor tile, meaning a different (usually smaller) grout depth — combining both into a single calculation without adjusting for the different depths will misstate the total volume.
  • Skipping the waste allowance on a first attempt. Grout applied for the first time often involves more cleanup loss than an experienced installer’s technique — the higher 15% allowance exists specifically for this situation, and running short mid-job on a batch that’s already started setting is an avoidable frustration.
  • Not sealing porous grout in wet areas. This doesn’t affect the quantity calculation, but standard cement-based grout is porous and typically needs a separate sealer in showers and other wet locations to resist staining and moisture absorption — worth budgeting for as a separate line item alongside the grout itself.
