How paint quantity is calculated

Paint quantity comes down to three numbers multiplied together: the area you're painting, how many coats you're applying, and your paint's coverage rate — with a waste allowance added on top for the reality of rolling, cutting in, and touch-ups.

Worked example — 14×12 ft room, 9 ft ceilings, walls only, 2 coats, 350 sq ft/gal, 10% waste:

  1. Wall perimeter: 2 × (14 + 12) = 52 ft
  2. Gross wall area: 52 × 9 = 468 sq ft
  3. Deduct 1 door (21 sq ft) and 2 windows (30 sq ft): 468 − 51 = 417 sq ft net wall area
  4. Gallons: (417 × 2 ÷ 350) × 1.10 ≈ 2.62 gallons → round up to 3 gallons
