Frequently asked questions
What is the highest possible SAT score? ›
The maximum SAT score is 1600, which consists of a perfect 800 in Math and a perfect 800 in Reading & Writing. The minimum score is 400 (200 per section).
What is a good SAT score? ›
The average SAT score is around 1010. A score of 1200+ puts you above average, 1400+ is excellent (top 10%), and 1500+ is exceptional (top 1%). What counts as "good" depends heavily on where you're applying — Ivy League schools typically see median scores above 1500.
How is the digital SAT scored? ›
The digital SAT uses adaptive testing — the difficulty of your second module in each section depends on your performance in the first. Your raw score (number correct) is converted to a scaled score of 200–800 per section using an equating process that accounts for test difficulty. There is no penalty for wrong answers.
How many times can I take the SAT? ›
There is no official limit on how many times you can take the SAT. Most students take it 2–3 times. Many colleges practice "superscoring" — taking your highest section scores across all attempts — so retaking can be beneficial even if your overall score doesn't improve dramatically.
What is superscoring? ›
Superscoring is when a college combines your highest Math score from one test date with your highest Reading & Writing score from another test date to create your best possible composite score. Most major universities now superscore the SAT. Always check each college's individual policy.
About this SAT score calculator
Our SAT score calculator converts your raw scores (number of questions correct) into estimated scaled scores using College Board's scoring methodology. The digital SAT, introduced in 2024, uses an adaptive format with two sections: Math (200–800) and Reading & Writing (200–800), for a combined total of 400–1600.
Digital SAT vs. paper SAT
The digital SAT launched in the US in March 2024 and replaced the paper SAT. Key differences include a shorter test (2 hours 14 minutes vs. 3 hours), adaptive modules, a built-in calculator for all Math questions, and immediate score availability. The scoring scale (400–1600) remains the same.
How to improve your SAT score
Identify your weakest section and focus your prep time there. Use official College Board practice tests available free at Khan Academy. Most students improve 50–150 points with dedicated preparation. Consider taking the PSAT first to get familiar with the format before your official SAT.
