Frequently asked questions
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade accounts for the fact that not all assignments count equally toward your final grade. For example, if your final exam is worth 50% of your grade, it impacts your overall score much more than a homework assignment worth 10%. Weighted grade = sum of (each category grade × its weight percentage).
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category's grade by its weight percentage, add all the results together, then divide by 100. For example: Homework 88% × 20% = 17.6, Midterm 82% × 30% = 24.6, Final 91% × 50% = 45.5 → total = 87.7%. This calculator does all that math for you automatically.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
Your category weights must total exactly 100% for an accurate weighted average. If they don't, the calculator will warn you. Common mistakes include forgetting a category, doubling a weight, or rounding individual weights. Adjust until the total shows 100%.
How is a weighted grade different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every assignment equally regardless of size or importance. A weighted average respects the relative importance of each category. If your finals are worth more than quizzes — as is typical — a simple average would understate the impact of your exam score on your final grade.
