How the ACT composite is calculated
The ACT composite score is a rounded average of four independently scaled section scores — English, Math, Reading, and Science — each converted from a raw count of correct answers to a scale of 1 to 36.
Worked example
English 28 + Math 30 + Reading 27 + Science 29 = 114. Divided by 4: 28.5. Rounded to the nearest whole number: 29.
That rounding step follows the ACT’s official convention of rounding a .5 average upward rather than downward — meaning a borderline average like 28.5 becomes 29, not 28. This is a small but meaningful detail: two students with the same four raw section scores in a different order could theoretically land on either side of a rounding boundary depending on how their individual section scaled scores combine, so understanding the exact rounding rule matters for accurately predicting a composite from section-level performance.
