FAQs
How is body fat percentage measured without calipers?
The US Navy circumference method uses neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements along with height to estimate body fat. For men: %BF = 86.01 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. For women it includes hip measurement. This method has an accuracy of ±3–4% compared to DEXA scans. It's free, requires only a tape measure, and is used by the US military for fitness assessments.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), for men: essential fat 2–5%, athletes 6–13%, fitness 14–17%, acceptable 18–24%, obese 25%+. For women: essential fat 10–13%, athletes 14–20%, fitness 21–24%, acceptable 25–31%, obese 32%+. Women naturally carry more essential fat due to hormonal needs. These ranges are guidelines — optimal body fat varies by age, individual physiology, and health goals.
