FAQs
At what age does female fertility decline?
Female fertility begins to gradually decline in the late 20s, with a more significant decline starting around age 32 and a sharper decline after 37. By age 40, monthly conception chances drop to around 5–10%, compared to 20–25% at peak fertility (ages 20–24). The decline is due to reduced egg quantity (ovarian reserve) and increasing egg quality issues with age, which also raises miscarriage rates. Men's fertility also declines with age but more gradually — sperm quality decreases after age 40–45.
How long does it typically take to get pregnant?
For healthy couples under 35: ~85% will conceive within 12 months of regular unprotected sex. Most guidelines suggest seeking evaluation after 12 months of trying (or 6 months for women 35 or older). Regular intercourse every 2–3 days throughout the month, or focusing on the fertile window (days 10–14 of a 28-day cycle), maximizes chances. About 15% of couples experience infertility, which is defined as failing to conceive after 12 months.
