Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade?
To calculate a simple average grade, add up your scores and divide by the total possible points. For example, if you scored 85/100 on a test, 92/100 on an assignment, and 78/100 on a quiz, your total is 255/300 = 85%. If assignments have different weights (like tests counting more than quizzes), you'll need a weighted grade calculator — use the "Weighted categories" tab above.
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade means different assignment types count for different percentages of your final grade. For example, tests might count for 40%, homework for 30%, and a final exam for 30%. Each category is calculated separately and then combined according to those weights.
How do I calculate my grade with missing assignments?
For missing assignments, enter a score of 0 and the full point value in the "out of" column. This will factor the zero into your overall grade. Alternatively, leave missing assignments out to see your grade based on completed work only.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
Our calculator automatically normalizes weights that don't add up to 100%. For example, if you enter weights of 30%, 30%, and 20% (totaling 80%), the calculator proportionally adjusts each to represent 37.5%, 37.5%, and 25% respectively. For best accuracy, enter weights that add up to exactly 100%.

About this grade calculator

Our free grade calculator makes it easy to find out exactly where you stand in any course. Whether your professor grades on a simple point system or a weighted category system, we've got you covered.

Simple vs. weighted grading

Many courses use a simple point system where every assignment is worth a certain number of points and everything is totaled at the end. Other courses use weighted categories — for example, homework might count for 20% of your grade while the final exam counts for 30%. Use the tab above that matches your syllabus.

Tips for improving your grade

If you're unhappy with your current grade, focus first on the highest-weighted assignments remaining in the semester. A strong performance on a 30%-weighted final exam can significantly move your overall grade. Use our Final Grade Calculator to find out exactly what you need.

Weighted grade categories Weighted

Add each grading category from your syllabus (e.g. Homework, Tests, Final Exam), set its weight, then enter your individual scores within each category.

How weighted grades work

In a weighted grading system, your professor assigns a percentage weight to each category of work. To find your overall grade, calculate your average within each category, then multiply each category average by its weight, and sum them all together.

For example: if you have an 88% in Homework (worth 30%) and a 92% in Tests (worth 70%), your overall grade is (0.88 × 30) + (0.92 × 70) = 26.4 + 64.4 = 90.8%.
