FAQs
What are the 5 main body shapes? ›
Hourglass: Bust and hips roughly equal, with a clearly defined waist (8+ inches smaller than hips). Pear/Triangle: Hips significantly wider than bust, narrower shoulders. Inverted Triangle/Apple (top): Shoulders and bust significantly wider than hips. Rectangle/Banana: Bust, waist, and hips roughly the same width with little waist definition. Apple (full): Weight centered around the midsection, with the waist wider than or equal to the hips. Body shape is genetic and changes with age, pregnancy, and weight fluctuation.
Does body shape affect health? ›
Apple-shaped bodies (fat carried around the abdomen) are associated with higher cardiovascular disease risk, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome compared to pear-shaped bodies (fat in hips/thighs). Waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are better predictors of cardiovascular risk than BMI alone — men >40" waist and women >35" waist have elevated risk. Body shape is largely genetic, but lifestyle factors including diet and exercise influence fat distribution. Core and cardio exercise specifically helps reduce visceral (belly) fat.
