Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Tax Amount = Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100). Total = Price + Tax Amount. Example: $100 at 8.5% → Tax = $8.50 → Total = $108.50.
How do I back out tax from a total price?
Pre-tax Price = Total ÷ (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100). Tax Amount = Total − Pre-tax Price. Example: $108.50 total at 8.5% → Pre-tax = $108.50 ÷ 1.085 = $100.00. Tax = $8.50.
What is the average US sales tax rate?
The average combined state and local sales tax rate in the US is about 6–8% depending on location. Some states (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Alaska) have no sales tax. California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%, with some local areas reaching over 10%.
