Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. 18% is considered a solid baseline; 20% or more is common for excellent service. For takeout, 10–15% is typical if you choose to tip. Buffets: 10% or a few dollars per person for the server who brings drinks.
How do I calculate a 20% tip in my head?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double it. Example: $65 bill → 10% = $6.50 → double = $13.00 tip. For 15%, find 10% and add half: $6.50 + $3.25 = $9.75.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach. In practice, most people tip on the total bill after tax, which results in a slightly higher tip. Either is acceptable — the difference on a $50 meal is typically under $1.
